About qawwali
What is qawwali?
Qawwali is energetic Sufi devotional music from South Asia, with poetry, singing, harmonium, drums and hand-clapping.
The music originated in South Asia, and its development is traditionally linked to the poet and musician Amir Khusrau in Delhi in the 13th century. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is widely credited with bringing qawwali to an international audience, and today it draws audiences far beyond South Asia, Norway included.
A qawwali group is often called a party. It is led by a lead singer with supporting singers, and has harmonium, tabla or dholak and a chorus that claps the rhythm. The musicians traditionally sit on the floor. The word is also spelt qawali.

Questions about qawwali
How do we book qawwali?
Send us the date, the place and roughly how many guests you expect, using the form or by phone. We reply within 24 hours with a proposal. Once you have decided, we book the musicians and agree the programme.
How much does it cost to hire qawwali?
The price depends on how long the musicians will play, how many musicians you would like, where the event is, and whether you also want food. Ask for a no-obligation quote.
Do you take bookings outside Oslo?
Yes. We are based in the Oslo area and take bookings all over Norway. Any travel costs are set out in the quote.
Do you take bookings elsewhere in the Nordics?
We are starting in Norway, but feel free to ask us about qawwali in Sweden, Denmark or elsewhere in the Nordics.
What do the musicians need at the venue?
Qawwali is traditionally performed seated, so the musicians need a space where they can sit together. We sort out space, sound and power with the venue in advance.
Can we request songs?
Yes. Tell us which songs or what kind of mood you would like, and we’ll agree the programme with the musicians before the evening.
How long do the musicians play?
We agree on the length based on your wishes, and it is set out in the quote.
